How much does a Tree Survey cost?

The cost of a tree survey can vary significantly based on several factors:

  • Size of the Site: Larger areas with more trees will naturally require more time and resources.

  • Number of trees: The quantity of trees to be assessed impacts the overall survey duration.

  • Location of the property: Accessibility and geographical factors can influence costs.

Typical cost:

While costs fluctuate widely, you can generally expect to pay anywhere between £200 - 300 (plus VAT) for a standard residential property with 10-15 trees.

‘Trees in Relation to Design, Demolition, and Construction - Recommendations Survey’

BS5837:2012 Tree Survey

‘Trees in Relation to Design, Demolition, and Construction - Recommendations Survey’

A British Standard offering recommendations for tree surveys in the context of development plans.

Purpose:

  • To assess the impact of a proposed development on existing trees.

  • To ensure a balance between tree preservation and development needs.

The 4 Key Stages:

Tree Survey:

  • Assessment of all trees on or near the site.

  • Data collection for each tree (height, spread, diameter, category).

  • Categorisation based on merit (A/B - high/moderate, C/U - low/unsuitable).

Arboricultural Opportunities & Constraints:

  • Tree Constraints Plan: overlays existing site features with tree data.

  • Identification of potential conflicts between trees and development.

  • Discussion on overcoming these conflicts.

Arboricultural Impact Assessment:

  • Evaluate the impact of development on trees (direct & indirect).

  • Assesses the potential for trees and development to co-exist.

Arboricultural Method Statement & Tree Protection Plan:

  • Method statement outlines construction methods to minimize tree damage.

  • Tree Protection Plan (TPP): a scaled drawing showing tree protection measures.

  • Monitoring of tree protection measures might be required as a condition.

Overall, BS5837:2012 ensures informed decision-making for development projects, balancing tree preservation with construction needs.

Tree Survey Timescale

At Origin, we understand that timescales can be a key factor for projects and ensuring their success. We aim to be onsite to complete the Tree Surveys within around 1 – 5 days. The follow-up report of either an impact assessment or Method statements and Tree Protection Plans are then completed within 2 – 4 days. However, if we know you have a specific deadline that you’re trying to achieve, we are always happy to help and try to make this achievable for you.

Tree Risk Management

Tree owners are obligated to ensure their trees do not pose unacceptable risks under UK law. This obligation involves maintaining trees in a safe condition. The frequency and depth of these assessments vary based on site needs and use.

Tree Risk Management Services:

  • Tree management strategies and site risk zoning.

  • Tree condition surveys and Visual Tree Assessments (VTAs).

  • Tree management reports.

  • Detailed assessments (decay detection, aerial inspections).

Surveys adhere to guidelines from the NTSG and Lantra. Tree Plotter is used for accurate tree data recording. All arboricultural consultants are highly qualified and produce detailed tree schedules, site plans, reports, management strategies, and policies.
